Juan Portillo

Juan Portillo (1980) holds a PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems (MIT-Portugal Programme). He is a Mechanical Engineer with about 20 years of experience in the energy sector. Half of them were in the Oil & Gas industry, where he worked in engineering consultancy companies and large companies such as Petrobras and Petróleos de Venezuela-PDVSA GAS. He developed various functions in process engineering, operations & maintenance, planning and control, strategic planning, large gas projects (in the order of thousands of million Euros), and the international procurement of goods and services. The rest of his professional experience has been devoted to research in offshore renewable energy systems at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (IST/UL), namely in wave energy systems, offshore floating wind, hybrid systems, and multi-purpose platforms, focused on potential applications to foster a Sustainable Blue Economy. Since 2017 he has also participated in teaching activities at IST/UL. Juan Portillo has postgraduate studies in Industrial Project Management (URBE), International Business Administration (Walden University), Renewable Energies (EUREC-HANZE UAS-IST/UL), Marine Renewable Energy Systems (IST/UL), Sustainable Energy Systems (IST-MIT), and more recently follows studies in Economics and Management of Science, Technology and Innovation (ISEG/UL).
