Replay Week: Blue Energy or Osmotic Power

Have you ever heard of blue energy? Or osmotic power? It is the generation of energy from differences in salinity in water, often referred to as Salinity Gradient Power. The ‘fuel’ consists of fresh and salt water. Rivers flow into the sea where the fresh water mixes with the salt water. Part of the river water is led along with seawater along a membrane stack in a housing, the so-called RED stack.

REDstack originated as a spin-off company of the water technology institute Wetsus. The theme ‘Blue Energy’ started there in 2004 with the aim of generating energy from fresh- and salt water. It soon became clear that this is a promising development.
