Biodiversity - Sixth mass extinction

The Earth has been hit by five mass extinctions in its long history. These were all caused by extreme natural phenomena. Many scientists warn that we are now heading towards a sixth mass extinction. The difference with the previous five? This one is entirely caused by humans. Due to human pressure such as population growth, habitat destruction, wildlife trade, pollution and climate change, numerous species around the world are now critically endangered.

To combat the extinction crisis, several successful measures have already been taken to save some mainly charismatic animals from extinction. Unfortunately, this cannot reverse the downward trend. Estimate is that since the year 1500, Earth may have lost around ten percent of the two million known species.

During the academic year 2022-2023, the New Energy Academy will elaborate on the nine planetary boundaries.
