Wrapping a building with thousands of colored LEDs is a new decorative trend in contemporary architecture. The LED lamps do not replace incandescent or energy-saving lamps, they replace a non-illuminated facade. This is a good example of the energy efficiency paradox. In short, this (economic) law states that more efficient equipment often results in new applications or more intensive use, as a result of which the total energy consumption will return to the same level, or even increase compared to the situation before the arrival of more efficient technology. These efficient form of lighting is not only influencing our energy usage, it is also having a severe impact on nature and even our own wellbeing.
